Your regular doctor or clinician can order STI tests, interpret results in context of your health history, and arrange treatment or referral when needed.
A primary care provider (PCP) — such as a family physician, internist, or nurse practitioner — can order urine, swab, and blood tests for STIs. This path works well if you already have a trusted clinician, live far from a specialty STI clinic, or want testing folded into a broader health visit.
Cost depends on your insurance plan, deductible, and which labs are in network. Preventive screening may be covered under many US plans with little or no cost-sharing, but coverage rules vary. Without insurance, you pay the clinic and lab fees; ask for cash-pay prices upfront.
Results become part of your medical record. HIPAA still restricts sharing without authorization, but insurers and other clinicians involved in your care may see relevant results. If you prefer testing that stays outside your primary record, an STI clinic may be a better fit.
Accuracy matches the lab tests ordered — typically the same NAATs and serology used elsewhere. Quality depends on ordering the right sites (genital, throat, rectal) and the right infections. Not every PCP routinely offers multi-site screening unless you ask.
Turnaround is usually a few days after the lab receives samples. Scheduling the visit itself can take longer than a walk-in STI clinic. Urgent PEP after a high-risk HIV exposure is often better handled at an ER or sexual health clinic that can start medication the same day.
Convenient if you already have an established relationship and can get a timely appointment. Rural patients may find PCP access easier than traveling to a specialty clinic. Less convenient if appointment wait times are long or your clinician is unfamiliar with sexual health screening.
Good for routine asymptomatic screening, discussing PrEP, integrating STI care with other health needs, and follow-up after a clinic diagnosis. Useful when you want continuity with a clinician who knows your history.
May not offer same-day walk-in sexual health care. Some PCPs under-order throat/rectal tests. Same-day PEP, partner services, and on-site treatment are less consistently available than at STI clinics.
